It is the question every North Texas homeowner eventually faces: your AC needs a significant repair, and you are wondering whether to fix it or replace the whole thing. Texas HVACR Pros was built on a repair-first philosophy β here is our honest framework for helping you make the right decision.
The most widely used rule of thumb in the HVAC industry is the 5,000 rule: multiply the repair cost by the age of the system. If the result exceeds $5,000, replacement is generally the better financial decision. Example: a $400 repair on a 10-year-old system equals $4,000 β repair makes sense. A $600 repair on a 12-year-old system equals $7,200 β replacement may make more sense.
The average lifespan of a central AC system in Texas is 12-17 years when properly maintained. In our climate where systems run nearly year-round, they tend toward the shorter end. If your system is under 8-10 years old and well-maintained, most repairs make financial sense. If it is 14+ years old, the calculation starts to shift toward replacement.
Not all repairs are equal. Capacitors, contactors, and thermostats are typically worth repairing at any age β they are inexpensive and the repair extends system life at low cost. Compressor replacement and evaporator coil replacement on an older system are often better replaced, as these costs approach or exceed the value of continuing with an aging system.
If your system uses R-22 refrigerant (manufactured before 2010), this is a strong factor toward replacement. R-22 was phased out in 2020 and is now extremely expensive β sometimes $100 or more per pound. A leak requiring a recharge can easily cost $800-1,500 just for the refrigerant.
When you call us for a diagnostic, we will always give you our honest assessment. If a repair makes financial sense, we will tell you. If replacement is the smarter choice, we will tell you that too β with numbers to back it up. We never push replacement to increase our revenue, and we never recommend a repair that is just delaying the inevitable.
